Dragoon Saloon Devlog
Hi! Panlord here!
TL;DR/DC: Tabletop Simulator Workshop Version of Dragoon Saloon: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3549616315
Anudda day, anudda game jam. My last game jam creation was GiMurin Gacha Grems for Holojam 6-- a Hololive game jam-- so I was pleasantly surprised when Doki Jam, another vtuber-focused game jam, was announced shortly after. And now here I am with the half-finished Dragoon Saloon ^-^" There's only so much that I could do as a solo dev so it's unfortunate that I couldn't finish in time, but I learned a lot and had a lot of fun!
Inspiration
Dragoon Saloon was inspired a lot by Alec Smith's Blokes card game. I wanted to make a similar, simple yet whimsical card game with ridiculous cards-- some being very simple while others being extremely overpowered. Doki Jam presented me with a lot of opportunity-- I've watched a bunch of Dokibird's streams every now and then so I could reference a lot of memes and memorable moments and immortalize them into silly cards in a silly card game!
The Doki Jam Process
I really only started one week into the jam, but I worked for even less. If I had the full two weeks of freedom, perhaps I could have finished what I wanted to submit to the jam, but due to personal commitments (and also getting kinda sick), I couldn't finish in time :'(. Nonetheless, what happened was I spent the first two days prototyping the card game and rules with a physical version. I designed, drew, and cut out all 60 cards on paper and then played with my brother. I knew the gameplay loop was a good one when we got yelled at for being too loud. Then I spent the next two days making all the art and building the framework for the cards in code (using Godot). Finally there was one more day of trying to code out the system and game mechanics until my body gave way and I had to step away for my health and for other personal commitments. All I have to submit is a half-finished game, if you can even call it that ^-^"
Alas, in the end I at least included a card compendium in my submission so you can look at all of the cards I've designed (as well as look into all of my thoughts that went into designing them). And if you happen to have Tabletop Simulator and are interested in playing with your friends (and fellow Dragoons, Wisps, Naplings, etc.), I've uploaded everything into the Steam Workshop!
